CASE STUDY: Card payments see dramatic increase in convenience

As the UK closed its doors on the outside world and went into lockdown, venturing out only for essentials, we were able to get an insight into the way cautious shoppers adapted to the new way of life. Card payment, particularly contactless payments, allow customers to have minimum contact with the shopkeeper, so we were interested to know, has the pandemic encouraged more of us to leave our cash in the bank?

On 1st April the limit on contactless spending went up from £30 to £45 to facilitate quick and easy transactions with reduced need for social contact. We examined the data from around 3000 convenience stores to see whether this has made a difference in the spending habits of customers in the c-store sector.

Before the lockdown, cards were used in 20-21% of purchases. The UK went into lockdown in week 12, when we see an immediate change in the ratio of card/cash spend. The change is driven by a need to reduce social contact but is also likely to be affected by the change in people’s routine as they no longer pass the cashpoint day to day. Anecdotal evidence from other sources tells us that ATM transactions are sharply down. School children are much less likely to be visiting stores with handfuls of small change, as they are having to stay at home.

Increased card payment percentages are made more substantial by the increased spend in c-stores. Average baskets, paid for by card, peaked at £13.50 in week 13 and despite some decreases in the weeks following remains very healthy. It’s also important to remember that many stores enforce a minimum spend on card transactions to protect their turnover, although some have relaxed this restriction to encourage social distancing. Average transactions climbing to well over £5.00 across all payment types make it more likely that customers will be spending enough to pay on card. This is also likely to be driving the growth of card payments in c-stores.

Despite declining spends as time goes on, as much of 52% of consumers have come to value their local convenience store thanks to lockdown.

If sales settle at a stronger level than previously, and the habit of using cards instead of cash remains, then c-stores should seriously consider their card payment provider to ensure that they are getting the best deal and thus, maximising their profits. We’ve partnered with Worldpay to offer our customers three month’s FREE BackOffice and Card Machine rental. Complete the form below to enquire or click here to find out more.
