Greenyard moved more quickly than the Food Standards Agency to recall their products due to an outbreak of Listeriosis linked to their frozen sweetcorn, which has been traced back to a Hungarian factory that is operated by Greenyard.
During this incident, there have been many cases directly linked to consumers not following the sweetcorn pack instructions to cook the product before consumption. While the source of this contamination was thought to have been limited to the sweetcorn, it was determined that the same strains of Listeria monocytogenes were detected in frozen vegetables produced by the same Hungarian company in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
As of the 8th of July, 43 products sold by retailers including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Aldi, and Lidl – have been recalled by Greenyard. Greenyard has halted production in Hungary for an in-depth review of the production processes and will not restart until the cause has been determined and eliminated.
Although the products have been voluntarily recalled, this does not mean that all are contaminated but the recall is to ensure that Greenyard’s commitment to ‘taking a maximum of precautionary measures’ is upheld.
Although many of the affected items are sold under own-label names of some larger retailers, all retailers should check whether or not they hold stock of any of these items. If so, contact your supplier to arrange compensation and collection of the recalled products.
