5 Steps to Twitter Success

If you’ve read our latest piece on Getting the most out of Social Media, you probably signed up to Twitter and are now wondering, what next?

To help you get started with Twitter, we’ve broken down the top 5 steps that we used to build up an account with over 6,000 followers.


Choose your objectives

Before you start on any social media platform, it’s essential to know what you want to achieve from your investment. Even though Social Media is free (unless you’re advertising), you’re still spending valuable time, and if you’re anything like us, you’ll want to get something back for that investment.

Some objective you may want to consider are:

  • Connecting with existing customers
  • Increasing awareness amongst prospective customers
  • Boosting sales on promotional items
  • Giving your shop a distinctive personality

Create a unique profile

If you’ve spent any time on Twitter, you’ll realise there are thousands of users all hungry for your attention. How do you stand out and get noticed amongst all the noise?

Give your profile an attractive look. Ensure that your profile picture and header are high quality and match the dimensions that Twitter expects (you can find some useful templates here), ensuring your profile doesn’t look warped or pixellated to visitors.

Consider your ‘Tone of Voice’. Social media is all about communication, so consider the way in which you’re going to go about communicating with people in Tweets and DM’s (direct messages). Once you’ve found something that works, stick to it.


Curate your follows list

Having a high number of followers is great, but if your follower list is not made up of the right people, then your messages will be ineffective. Think back to your objective and use this to impact your approach to followers.

If you’re trying to build a list of existing customers, then promote your Twitter profile in store with posters and word of mouth mentions.

If you’re trying to create a list of prospective shoppers, check out the Twitter profiles of local businesses and reach out to their followers by following them first and Tweeting to them to introduce yourself.

One way in which business Twitter users help each other is by “retweeting” each other’s content. This increases your “reach” dramatically. So look out for tweets from other local businesses and retweet them with positive comments.


Start Tweeting

Having a Twitter profile is a good start, but Twitter is all about Tweets! Unlike most other social networks, however, Tweets are hugely time-sensitive and will quickly become buried under more recent ones. We’ve found it works for us when our content is:

Regular – post regularly to keep your tweets on the walls of your followers (you can tweet the same thing multiple times throughout the day if you wish).

Engaging – If you can build up a reputation as an entertaining feed then people will be more likely to spot your posts and interact with them.

Correctly Tagged – #Hashtags are a great way to let your followers know about the topic of your content. It also means that your Tweets will appear in searches for Hashtags, increasing your reach.

Not too contentious – As this is a business twitter account, avoid expressing your own political or personal views too much. If you want to express your personal views, then set up your own, separate, personal twitter account.


Encourage feedback and conversation

We’ve already said that social media is not at its heart a marketing tool but instead for communication. Think of your Twitter feed as a two-way street and encourage your followers to engage directly with you.

It is essential to answer any tweets you receive positively. Every comment is valuable, even the negative ones. With complete honesty, and some good humour, it’s hard to go wrong!
